Introduction to the SEND code of practice

In July 2014 the department for education published a new Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Code of Practice for children and young people aged 0 – 25 years. 

Under the new system, education, health and social care services will be encouraged to work more closely together to help them better understand each child/young person’s needs and deliver more suitable services to help children/young people achieve their outcomes. 
The SEND Code of Practice states, every local authority must publish a Local Offer. The Local Offer should clearly set out, in one place information on what services will be available locally to support children and young people with SEN, including education, health and social care services. The Suffolk Local Offer is available here. 
The information below intends to introduce practitioners in Health and Social Care to the vast amount of information, support and training that is available for professionals work with children and families who have SEND. 
The Council for Disabled Children: CDC are the umbrella body for the disabled children's sector providing information guidance and training for everyone supporting the best outcomes for children and young people. Sign up to CDC newsletters here.

As part of the Workforce Development SEND Learning and Development offer, a selection of training opportunities (including Locality based practitioner workshops, dates to be confirmed) are offered on Suffolk CPD online. If you have not already created a training profile on Suffolk CPD Online you will need to do this, before booking onto to an event. Instructions can be found here
