Qualifications
“From 1 September 2014 the qualification requirements for out of school clubs have changed, such that the majority of clubs will no longer be legally required to employ staff with specific childcare or playwork qualifications. Note that, although it is no longer a statutory requirement for most out of school clubs, settings wishing to follow best practice will still employ qualified staff, and in any event, all settings will need to demonstrate to the Ofsted inspector that their staff have appropriate skills and experience”.

Transitioning to Playwork

Early Years practitioners who hold a Level 3 qualification, such as the Early Years Educator, can transition into Playwork and undertake a transition qualification:

Choosing a provider

You will find a range of training providers both locally and nationally who can support you in gaining the qualification you want. When choosing a training provider there are several things you will need to consider

• the cost of the qualification – individual training providers charge different rates which reflect the type of service they provide
• How you learn best – there are a range of different learning experiences from regular attendance at a classroom distance learning. Make sure and choose the type that suits you best

• When you want to start your qualification and the time given to complete – you can enrol with some providers at any point during the year (rolling / open enrolment) and set your target completion date with them. Other providers will have a clear start and finish date

• Previous learner feedback – find out from other practitioners their experiences of studying with a training provider you are interested in. For example, ask what level of support was given, the quality of the teaching and how quickly feedback was given on work submitted

Whilst we can advise on qualifications, Suffolk County Council does not have a role in approving or inspecting practitioner qualifications. This is part of Ofsted’s role who inspect early years providers against the EYFS framework
