This is a new page dedicated to the notification of COVID-19 cases within schools.

As we move into the new school year, colleagues in Children and Young People and Public Health teams continue to work to develop processes to alert us of suspected and confirmed cases of COVID-19 across all of our complex settings. Early Years and Education settings are one of the key complex setting groups and this process is to assist us to work with Public Health colleagues to monitor the rate of infection and support all education settings through what can be a difficult period.

In order to do this, we need your help.

You will have hopefully seen in recent editions of Suffolk Headlines a flowchart that we have provided to outline the steps you need to take in light of a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19 in your school. The updated flowchart is posted below. It asks that you contact the relevant team within the Children and Young People’s (CYP) directorate when you have a suspected case where a test has not been undertaken or the test result is not yet known. We have created a short form for you to complete when you have a suspected case so that we receive consistent information from all schools, this is the ‘School/FE Colleges – Untested/Unknown results form’ below.

CYP log this information and alert Suffolk Public Health colleagues so that they have certain details already should we need to contact them for advice and support.

In accordance with the flow chart guidance if a case is confirmed as positive following a test, you will need to notify Public Health England (PHE) on 0300 303 8537 (option 1) and we ask that you also update CYP colleagues by completing the second part of the form, this is the ‘School/FE Colleges – result known form’ below. The outcome of the PHE contact is also logged so we can support schools and settings further based on advice received and feed this into the work of the Local Outbreak planning.

You will also need to have staff and pupil contact details available and ready to share with Public Health so that if a bubble of children and staff does need to be isolated, the information can be easily obtained and quick communication made with anyone affected. We understand that this is another strand of work in an already difficult time for schools, but we hope that you understand the need for these processes in order to help schools remain safe and secure in the coming months.
